St Lucia

Having arrived in Castries, a busy port which can have upto six cruiseliners and traffic, there seemed to be more of a busy feel to this island.

St Lucia is known for the Pitons which are two volcanic spires, one is known as Gros Piton, the smaller one is known as Petit Piton. They are located near the town of Soufriere.

I went on tour around the island, I visited artisans who fashioned designs into wood. I met Roger who was a talented artist who made fantastic masks and pieces of art which showed the Pitons, palm trees and encapsulated St Lucian life.

In the front of this photograph is a replica of the present Roger had made as a wedding present for Kate Middleton and Prince William. To the eye, it’s a pair of wedding rings, to the side, it’s a couple embracing.

Here is another example of his work, the guide in the workshop advised that in St Lucia, when a baby is born, the umbilical chord is kept and planted with a palm tree seed. The palm tree grows with the baby which is a wonderful story don’t you think?

After this, we went to an art gallery where the artist showed us how she painted the St Lucian flower which is the Hibiscus.

After this we went further North upto the island. We saw Rodney Bay where there were marinas and yachts. We stopped at a beach called Reduit beach for a while. The skies were a rich blue and the water was so inviting.

We then went through villages and saw locals relaxing and chatting in the street. The people were so friendly.

Nearer Pigeon Island, we saw where the Caribbean sea met the Atlantic. It was invigorating to feel the breeze!

We went to a vista at Pigeon Island and took in the outstanding view. In a way you would have thought you were in the west coast of Ireland except for the palm trees and cacti.

We went back to the port of Castries and went to the fruit and vegetable market which had had a bounty of mangoes and tropical food.

There was a craft market as well.

We then visited Chef Robby’s, a Caribbean restaurant and sampled the local beer and the most scrumptious homemade nachos and spicy salsa!
